Ignite Studio and Nickel Plate Arts are teaming up once again for Comic Book 2023. Celebrating 10 years, Comic Book in a Day has become a fixture in the local illustration community each year. Join us for workshops with professional comic book artists, sign-up for the challenge competition, or swing by Ignite on the day of the event to partake in the festivities. Watch as competitors race to complete a six page comic book spread in just eight hours, and find out who will take home this year’s championship belt.

Turning Everyday Experiences into Great Comics

Reigning Comic Book in a Day champion, Ella Satterfield, has a knack for taking something simple and turning it into a great story. Join her for a live demo of her storytelling skills while she makes a mini-comic using digital tools like Procreate and Photoshop. Don’t miss out on these great tips and tricks. No registration requried.

Join Ignite for a creative warm-up ahead of the big Comic Book in a Day event on Saturday, January 21st. Delve into the basics of visual storytelling as you learn how to develop a narrative and characters. Whether you’re competing as a challenge artist or just getting started with comic creation, this workshop offers a chance to flex your creative muscles. Registration begins two weeks prior to class. What Makes a Comic Book?

Discover the elements of a comic book and how to knit them all together to tell a visual story. From layout and lettering to color and dialogue, this crash course covers the tools you’ll need to make a great comic book story. You’ll walk away ready to create the next great graphic story. The Art of Found Object Costuming
January 18, 6 pm – 7 pm

Comic books and cosplay are like peanut butter and jelly. Learn how to cosplay on a budget. It’s a common dilemma: you want to cosplay, but you don’t have much cash. Or you don’t have access to a sewing machine, and wouldn’t know what to do with it if you did. We’ll show you costumes made for less than $10, plus discuss character selection, the process of deconstructing a costume, and how to build a complete out of things you have around the house. Registration required.

Think outside of the panel as you gear up for Comic Book in a Day 2023. Once you’ve learned the rules, have the fun is breaking them. Join us for a look at some unconventional comic books and their creators, and find inspiration for your next comic creation. Registration begins two weeks prior to class. Ages 8 and up.
Comic Book in a Day

Comic Book in a Day is back! Follow along as challenge artists compete to create an entire comic book in under eight hours. Meet professional comic book artists including the esteemed Bob Hall. Watch live drawing demos. Try your hand at drawing your own comic book. Add a panel to a collaborative comic book project. Participate in a comic book read-a-thon. And take a turn experimenting with VR art. Stop by periodically throughout the day to see how the challenge artists progress, and find out who takes home the championship belt.
