Meet the Equipment: Maker Lab Sewing Machines

by Kenzye P.
First off, say hello to the new Janome HD 5000 sewing machine at the Ignite Maker Lab. This machine is considered top-of-the-line for all kinds of artists, tailors, seamstresses, and crafters alike. With internal storage for accessories, recommended stitch settings, and helpful threading guides; this machine is suitable for all sewists.

Secondly, we have a machine with quilting and sewing capabilities: the Babylock Allegro. This machine allows for piecing and quilting in one machine. The Allegro has 12 inches of project space, 200 built in stitches and can run at speeds of up to 1000 stitches per minute. Seasoned quilters can complete a project from start to finish. We recommend this machine to advanced quilters.

Lastly, our final addition is a state-of-the-art Serger machine: the Babylock Triumph. This machine offers 5 inches of throat space, variable speed control and a plethora of stitch combinations. We recommend this machine to patrons with previous serging experience.
HOW ARE THESE MACHINES DIFFERENT?
Currently, Ignite Studio in Fishers has two basic Brother machines and two Singer heavy duty machines. These two styles of machine are best for beginner level sewists and have the most basic functionality. The Janome HD sewing machine at the Ignite Maker Lab in Noblesville features both standard and decorative stitching options making it exceptional for all kinds of projects. Additionally, the Janome has internal storage on top of the machine for all the different feet, making swaps a breeze. The Babylock machines are for advanced quilting and garment-making and not recommended for beginners.
HOW CAN I LEARN?
To learn more about how to use the Janome machine and manage its settings, check out this video. We recommend that the Janome and Babylock machines be used by experienced sewists. If you are learning to sew, machines may be reserved at the Ignite Studio (Fishers). Get inspired with some example projects around the Lab or find one of the many books on sewing at Ignite Studio in Fishers. You can also find fun projects on the Ignite Studio blog page, like making a scrunchie or upcycling an old shirt. If you’re completely new to sewing, I recommend signing up for our Sewing Machine Quick Start on the first Thursday of every month at 6p at Ignite Studio Fishers.
WHAT DO I BRING WITH ME?
A variety of threads can be found in the Maker Lab as well as pre-wound white and black bobbins and empty bobbins to load with your own desired color. Only small squares of scrap fabric are provided for testing the machines settings. You must bring your own project and fabric for larger projects. You are also welcome to bring your own thread. Ignite Maker Lab asks that you only use the needles provided in the lab on our machines.
Come on down to the Ignite Maker Lab today to try out the sewing machines and get started on your next stitching project!
