The Ignite Studio kit library has a variety of art mediums to try out. In this blog, I will be trying out our Oil Pastel Kit while sharing the process & a few tips along the way. Oil pastels are a painting medium that combines a binder and pigments into a stick or crayon form. They are known for being a dust-free, non-drying, and soft medium that offers bold & rich colors. Inside the kit you’ll find:

Before you get started, here are some tips for clean-up:
- Create with newspaper or paper towels underneath your project to catch oil pastel flakes
- Keep a small rag or paper towel handy to wipe off dirty or stained oil pastels.
- Wear an apron
- Work with a glove
For my project, I tried painting a pumpkin cat. First, I sketched out the pumpkin, and experimented with layering some blues & greens for the sky and grass. I started blending them with the blending stump & white oil pastels.
Next, I stippled on a white for the flowers & tried to scratch out some details using a paper clip & popsicle stick. While those two worked okay, I found scraping details with a plastic knife worked out great.
Lastly, I layered a brighter orange for the pumpkin, refined the shape more, & drew some details in the grass & pumpkin using colored pencils.
After scraping away a few areas to add texture, my painting was complete.
