How to Use Acrylic Markers

by Hana Sugasawa

At Ignite Studio, one of my favorite kit’s we have in the library is the Acrylic Marker kit. In this blog I will be sharing some helpful resources and tips, as well as three project ideas for some inspiration. Read on to learn how to use acrylic markers.

What are Acrylic Markers?

Acrylic Markers are filled with water-based, opaque acrylic paint. They come in an assortment of bold and rich colors. One of the best things about these markers is that you can enjoy the fun of painting, without the mess of getting water cups or paintbrushes. They’re easy to use on a variety of surfaces, including paper, wood, textiles, glass, ceramics, rocks, and more!

Ignite provides paper with our kits for creating drawings. However, you’re always welcome to bring in your own materials and personal projects to decorate!

What’s Inside Ignite’s Acrylic Marker Kit

Ignite’s kit comes with everything you need to get started on a drawing, including:

  • Assorted Paint pens
  • Pencils
  • Mixed Media Paper
  • Eraser

The kit will also come with an instructional book, How To Draw 100 Graffiti Arts, which include step-by-step drawing and lettering prompts that can introduce you to ways of lettering in a bold graffiti-style where these markers can really shine.

How to Us Acrylic Markers

Some tips before getting started. With the cap on, shake the marker a few times. Depending on the type of acrylic marker, there may be a ball inside. With POSCA markers, you will hear a clicking sound indicating that the paint inside the marker is being mixed.

Prime and test the marker. Press the tip a gently a few times on a spare piece of paper until the tip is filled with paint. Test the flow on your spare paper. If the line is clear, your acrylic marker is ready. It is useful to keep a cloth at hand to clean the tip easily or absorb any excess paint.

Re-priming: If the paint flows less freely during use, remember to put the cap on first before shaking again.

Cleaning the Marker / Troubleshooting: If the marker is dirty, try running the marker tip under the tap for a few seconds, and re-prime and test the marker.

If you need additional help, or the markers are running dry, please bring it to a staff member & let them know!
